Official sponsors of the National Football League, Pepsi Max, wanted to inspire the usually reserved British fans to show support by offering the fans a chance to win big prizes by paying with enthusiasm!
The Oomph-O-Meter vending machine is a Vendo 407 which we modified to turn into an extreme vending machine. The model was chosen for its classic style, huge frame and imposing, dominant look which was an important aspect of the brief.
The original machine was stripped back, this was necessary to allow for our own technology to be integrated. This meant dispensing with the coin mechanism as well as excess drink can channels and refrigeration. On the outside we removed the right panel and buttons and wrapped the whole drinks machine in bespoke branded vinyls. This gave the machine a refreshing new and unique look.
Inside the machine we installed front and side facing Go-Pro cameras that provided a live video and audio stream for the control centre.
To allow audio communication from the machine we integrated two amplifiers and five speakers. A 300W amplifier connected to four car speakers and 2KW amplifier powering an 8" subwoofer.
The game was developed in node.js with two computers communicating via a LAN connection using a websocket protocol to update the front-end (screen) on the vending machine.
Pepsi Max cans were dispensed using a coded communication between the control centre PC and an Arduino micro-controller in the vending machine
Finally the application inside the vending machine also controlled a compact and lightweight dye sublimation printer allowing us to quickly print out prizes from the giveaway draw. Each ticket was printed with a unique security code and could be used by the winnder to claim a large selection of prizes
