The mathematics behind particle systems is something that most people can only dream of doing. Once the particle system has been developed, however, creating particle effects becomes a whole lot easier.
We have been busy developing our own particle system, the above demo is by our lead developer David Morasz. The new particle system will soon be open sourced enabling anyone with a background in real-time motion graphics to use it to create their own particle effects.
The system generates particles in real-time from 3D shapes and can also be combined with sensors such as Microsoft's Kinect. Being able to generate this many particles in real-time means that it can be used for interactive art installations or can be used for quickly producing video without the time consuming hassle of rendering to see the result. Using real-time graphics as part of shows means that install times as well as on the fly creative developments can be quickly achieved.
